Boston-area Biomedical Informatics Research Training Program

The Boston-area Biomedical Informatics Research Training Program (BIRT) is a consortium of leading biomedical informatics laboratories at Harvard, MIT, Boston University, and Tufts-New England Medical Center.

BIRT faculty and researchers comprise a vibrant academic community of individuals with diverse backgrounds and broad-ranging interests, providing trainees with opportunities for interaction and collaboration in biomedical informatics research. Trainees complete a core curriculum involving coursework, seminars, and a research project.

Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year, with a start date of July 2008, are now being accepted. The deadline for applications is January 15, except for doctoral programs, as noted below.

Advanced degrees are offered at

·         Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) at MIT

o        Master’s program in biomedical informatics, limited to trainees with prior advanced degrees in health-related fields (e.g., MD, DDS, advanced degree in nursing)

o        Deadline for applications: January 15

·         Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT

o        Doctoral program in EECS

o        Deadline for applications: December 15

·         Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard

o        Doctoral program in Health Policy, with concentration in Health Decision Sciences

o        Deadline for applications: Mid-December

For United States citizens and permanent residents, pre- and post-doctoral fellowships provide stipend, tuition, and travel funds, typically for two- to three-year periods. These funded positions are supported by a training grant from the National Library of Medicine, NIH and are administered by HST and the Harvard Medical School Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMI).

Eligible candidates who are applying to MIT degree programs above do not need to fill in a separate application to be considered for NLM-funded positions. Candidates who are not applying for admission into the MIT degree programs listed above need to fill an application.
